"The most important single ingredient in the formula of success is knowing how to get along with people."

- Theodore Roosevelt

Have you ever wondered why some people just seem to have no trouble achieving whatever they set out to do? Why everyone seems to believe in them and provide them with the support they need? Well, perhaps they, just like Roosevelt in the encouraging quote above, have figured out that your success in life is affected a great deal by the people around you. It has to do with using all of your abilities and putting everything you've got into getting what you desire. This typically entails convincing other people of your skills and abilities, of why they should believe in you and your ideas.

For example, have you ever been in a situation where you are talking on the phone with a friend, and all of a sudden you realize you've been on the phone for a good few hours? Well, chances are, you've been hypnotized. Conversational hypnosis (also known as 'covert hypnosis') has been around for centuries, and has been used willingly (by politicians, advertising agents, salesmen, hypnotherapist), and unwillingly (by your friends) for a variety of reasons. Like the car salesman who convinces you how good you will feel if you buy that beautiful, state of the art '99 Ford Fiesta and the way it's going to fulfill your needs, although that is not what you are really looking for.

It's the art of getting people in a trance-like state using carefully selected words, gestures, and body language for achieving a kind of 'magical' interaction, in which they get so 'lost in the moment' they start to agree with you, without really thinking about what you are saying. In other words, with covert hypnosis you have all the necessary tools to build instant rapport, pass through the conscious mind and its critical factor, and then simply plant your message in the other person's subconscious. Sounds lovely, doesn't it?

So how does one go about doing that? Let's take a look at a few basic techniques, their use, and why they work.

First things first - you need to achieve rapport! It is essential, and absolutely no form of hypnosis can take place without first achieving it. Some of you might be thinking "So, what is this 'rapport' you speak of?" Basically, by 'rapport' you should understand being 'in sync' with the given person - thinking from their perspective, being on the same wavelength, if you will. What happens if you have not achieved rapport, and try to persuade someone? Well, to him, you are going to look like a door-to-door salesman - if he doesn't trust you, all your talking is going to either bore him, or annoy him.

One of the most widely used rapport-building techniques is called 'mirroring', and to your surprise, it's exactly what it says it is - syncing with the other person's emotions and thoughts and imitating his body language. For example, let's say a friend of yours is sitting near you, cursing someone, because he broke his car window. How would you build rapport with your friend in the given situation? Well, you start off with examining his posture - if he has his legs crossed, mirror that! Cross your own legs; he will respond on a subconscious level. Then examine his emotional state - in the given situation, he is clearly upset about having to go through the trouble of getting his window replaced. He will feel a lot better if you empathize with him, show him you care, be on his side. And that is how you build instant rapport - not too hard, is it? Keep in mind that mirroring too much will have the opposite effect.

The next thing you want to do is create a bit of confusion. You need to create confusion in order to bypass the critical thinking factor. A confusion technique usually consists of overwhelming the other person with more information than he can analyze, and thus get your suggestions to go straight to his subconscious (and that is what you want).

All in all, conversational hypnosis is not all that hard once you master these basics and can be of great use while engaging in ANY kind of conversation.
