"Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."
Forming beneficial habits is hard, but the good thing is that once you do turn something into a habit, it becomes incredibly easy to do every single day. Habits such as exercising, becoming tidier, eating healthier, brushing and flossing every day, and reading more can all enrich your life and help you become a happier, healthier person. Almost everyone, however, could use some help with kick-starting these daily activities.
A great way to form beneficial habits is to get the whole family involved. Perhaps everyone could stand to be a little healthier or help more around the house. Here are four ways that the whole family can get together and help each other form good habits:
1) Encourage Each Other
One of the best parts of having a family is that you know that someone is always there to encourage you in your endeavors. In a spiritually encouraging quote from Matthew 5:16, Christians read that we are to "let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." Nowhere should your light shine more brightly than before your family. Family members should work hard to set a good example for one another, to encourage each other when extra motivation is needed, and to celebrate each other's accomplishments.
2) Focus on Starting Small
Speaking of celebrating each other's accomplishments, family members should commend each other's efforts no matter how small they might be at first. For example, if everyone has made a commitment to help with the housework and your kids tried to clean up their rooms but did not do the best job, then thank them for the work they did and tell them kindly where they could improve a little more for next time.
3) Do not Push It Off Until Tomorrow
You and your family will never make a habit out of something if you are constantly pushing it off for the next day. Perhaps you want to commit to going to daily walks, but when the time comes around every day someone suggests that you just start doing it tomorrow. However, if you do not all put in the effort to jump over the initial hurdle of laziness, then you are never actually going to be able to get yourselves out their every day.
4) Ask God for Help
God always wants to see us trying to improve ourselves, and He will gladly lend a helping hand if He sees that we are putting in the effort. Pray together as a family for His guidance in helping everyone achieve their goals and form the habits that they want to form, and encourage everyone to ask for guidance in their own private prayers as well.
With the help of our family members there is rarely anything that we cannot achieve. Just encourage each other, start small, do not put things off until tomorrow, ask God for assistance, and everyone will be able to accomplish anything that they set your minds to.
Spiritual Prayer
"O Lord God, do not destroy Your people, Your inheritance, which You have redeemed through Your greatness, which You have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand. Remember Your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Do not look at the stubbornness of this people or at their wickedness or their sin. Otherwise, the land from which You brought us may say, 'Because the Lord was not able to bring them into the land which He promised them and because He hated them, He has brought them out to slay them in the wilderness.' Yet they are your people, Your inheritance, whom You brought out by Your mighty power and by Your stretched-out arm."
